Another excellent season is wrapping up. The wild birds were plentiful this year with the SD Game, Fish & Parks estimating a 75% increase statewide. I think we saw all of that and more at Eagle Pass Lodge.
The hunting was challenging early until we got our record crop of corn out of the field. Because of the high corn yield, it took an extra week or so to dry down so we could harvest it. We had to rely on sloughs, tree belts and milo strips to get our limits. After the corn was harvested, the birds began bunching up in the corn strips and they became very spooky. It was great fun to see flushes of several hundred pheasants all at once. Limits became easier when our tactics worked out.
I have never seen as many hens as we had this year. They easily out-numbered the roosters. That should make for an outstanding crop of wild birds in 2015.
