Frequently Asked Questions About Pheasant Hunting in South Dakota

Where is the best airport to fly into?

There are several options. Pierre is the closest airport (one hour from the lodge) and has direct service to Denver on a United-based shuttle. Aberdeen is the next best option (1½ hour from the lodge). It has a Delta-based shuttle to Minneapolis. Sioux Falls is also an option (2½ hours from the lodge), but there is a surcharge for a large group shuttle service. Small groups will need to rent ground vehicles. Sioux Falls has direct flights to several major hubs on several different carriers.

Can private planes land closer?

Highmore(15 minutes from the lodge) has a 3,800’ paved runway and Jet-A fuel. Pierre has a very nice private jet service adjacent to the main terminal.

Is there cellular service?

The lodge is located within 5 miles of an AT&T tower. Excellent cellular service. Plus, there is high-speed, fiber-optic Internet service.

Do you mix groups of hunters during hunts?

Yes, everyone hunts in the same group at Eagle Pass Lodge. We need large groups to have that traditional SD hunt with walkers and blockers. Because of the camaraderie, many of our small groups ask to be mixed with the same guests every year and many have become good friends. We make sure everyone is a “safe hunter” before a shell is fired.

How early in the day do hunts start?

We typically serve breakfast at 8:00; have a safety meeting (first day only at 9:45); warm up with some clay shooting at 10:00, and load the bus to go hunt at 10:30. We’ll return to the lodge at about 12:30-1:00 for a one hour lunch break and then back out to hunt until 3:00-4:00.

Do you have guns for guests to use?

Most of our guests bring their own guns, however, we have several good quality, over and under, 12- and 20-gauge shotguns to rent for $200 per stay.

Can I bring my own dog?

Yes. We do not allow dogs in the lodge, but we have heated kennel runs for their care. Provided they are trained and do not disrupt the hunt, they are a welcome addition.

Is there an option to have a private room?

Yes. Our spacious rooms all have two queen beds and a bathroom. If you want privacy, our rate for private rooms is $250 per night for your 3- or 4-night stay.

What if I bring a non-shooting companion?

Our rate for a non-shooting guest is $1,000. This rate allows them to share their room, join the group for meals, enjoy the complimentary beverages, watch movies in the theater, enjoy the hot tub and play tennis.

What brand of beverages can I expect?

We put out popular brands of Bourbon, Scotch, and Blended Whiskey. As well as Vodka, Gin, Rum and several Beers. The brands change somewhat from year to year depending on guests’ preferences. If you contact us before your hunt, we can try and have your preferred brand on hand. Wines served are typically 90-94 rated wines with the better wines served at dinner. We do have a beverage upgrade option that allows you to pre-order more expensive wines and spirits.

Do you have a pro shop?

We do stock a limited selection of shell vests, hunting shirts, caps, and shooting glasses. If your group requests, we can stop off at a sporting goods store near the airport for boots, pants, outerwear, etc.
